McKENZIE, Daniel C., Rev. (1833-1919)
Assembly memorial minute 1920
The Rev. Daniel McKenzie, who died on the 16th November, 1919, was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1833. After five years’ ministry at Kinghorn, he was called to Ryrie Street, Geelong, where he remained from 1867 to 1871, when he was transferred to Footscray.
In 1878 he became minister of St. George’s, Collingwood, where he remained until he resigned 26 years later. In 1888 he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. He was Treasurer of Melbourne North Presbytery for the long period of 40 years.
Mr. McKenzie was a man of fine bodily presence, of marked intellectual gifts, and high Christian character. His ministry in all his various spheres of labour was a successful one. His preaching was Gospel preaching, its heart and core being the Cross of Christ, a risen and ever-present Saviour.
In the homes of his people he was ever warmly welcome, for he was pastor as well as preacher, always leaving fragrant memories behind. He had rich social gifts. His kindly humour was no less characteristic of him than his sincere piety and his upright life. Nor must we forget that larger ministry in which he played no inconspicuous part. He took a full and useful share in the work of Presbytery and General Assembly. His name is embalmed in many a heart as that of an able and devout minister of Jesus Christ.
The Assembly expresses its sincere sympathy with his sons in their bereavement.
