MacDONALD, Alexander, Rev. (1851-1921)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1921

The Rev. Alexander Macdonald was born at Glen Urquhart, Inverness, about 70 years ago. After receiving a good secondary education in Inverness, he entered a solicitor’s office, and afterwards held a responsible position in Dalkeith. While attending classes in the University of Glasgow, he was deeply influenced by Messrs. Moody and Sankey’s first Mission in Great Britain.

Mr. Macdonald came to Victoria nearly 30 years ago, and entered the service of the Home Mission Committee. He laboured for 16 years at difficult outposts, and, though his physical endurance was severely tried, held bravely to his work. In 1908, after a session in the Ormond College Theological Hall, he was ordained, and inducted into the charge, of Alexandra, where he laboured until, in 1916, the tax on his strength became too great.

Although he held no other charge, he did much useful work for the Church. His brief closing ministry at Yarra Glen made a deep impression. After a week’s illness, he entered on the higher life on the 25th January, 1921.

Mr. Macdonald was a gentle, courteous, and single-minded servant of Jesus Christ, who did much good work for his Master, and was greatly loved by many friends.

The Assembly expresses its sympathy with his widow and son in their great loss.
