HENDERSON, James, Rev. (1829-1922)
Assembly memorial minute 1922
The Rev James Henderson was born at Dalpatrick, in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1829. In London as a student, he came under the influence of Dr. James Hamilton, of Regent Square Church, and was greatly stirred by him. After receiving licence in 1858, he preached for a short time at Fort William in Wigtonshire. There he heard the call coming from Australia for Ministers.
Landing in Victoria, he laboured in this State for some six months, then crossed to Tasmania, where he became Minister of Evandale. After a short time, he was called to Hagley. In 1864 he returned to Victoria under call to Balmoral. For the long space of 43 years he ministered to a people deeply attached to him until he was compelled by advancing age to retire—in 1907.
In 1892 the Church honoured him by calling him to the Moderator’s chair. On his retirement, he associated himself with St. John’s Church in Elsternwick, and for many years did most useful work there as a Member of Session. His removal severs another of the few remaining links in that long line of faithful devoted Ministers who did much to establish and build up the Church in the early days of this new land.
The Assembly tenders its sincere sympathy to his family.
