WILSON, John Green, Rev. (1838-1923)
Assembly memorial minute 1923
The Rev. John G. Wilson, who passed away on the 19th March, was an old and honoured minister of the Church. A native of Cumberland, in England, he came to Victoria many years ago. He belonged to the Congregational Church, but, after a time, joined the Presbyterian Church.
Most of his active ministry was spent in Gippsland. In that province he served for 33 years, first at Rosedale for 11 years, and then at Traralgon for 22 years. During the early part of his ministry there his charge was very extensive and included the districts of Rosedale, Denison, Traralgon and Morwell.
Most of his travelling was done on horseback, in all weathers, while the roads were bad and the bridges few. He was strong and healthy, and did much hard work. He had the spirit of a pioneer, and did his best to supply remote districts with religious ordinances. He was faithful, persevering and unwearied in his labours as a minister of Christ. He took a keen interest in Home Mission work, and was instrumental in establishing several Home Mission Stations, most of which are now charges.
He was regular in his attendance at Presbytery meetings, was a wise counsellor and gave valuable assistance in Presbytery business. He had a knowledge of architecture, and prepared plans and specifications for not a few Church buildings and manses. As a man, he was clear-headed, sagacious and wise. He was also genial, cheery and kindly. As a preacher he was earnest, solid and evangelical.
As a pastor he was faithful and brotherly. In his ministrations to the sick he was sympathetic and tender. About 15 or 16 years ago he resigned the Traralgon charge and went to reside at Sebastopol, near Ballarat, and while there he conducted services as long as he was able. He attained the very advanced age of 85 years, and, after some months of growing weakness and weariness, he entered into rest. His was a long and faithful ministry, and has been fruitful of much good. “He, being dead, yet speaketh.”
The Assembly expresses its earnest sympathy with his widow and family.
