McINTOSH, John, Rev. (1854-1924)
Assembly memorial minute 1925
The Rev.JOHN McINTOSH was born at Caithness, Scotland, in 1854. He attended the Grammar School at Aberdeen, and early determined to train for the Holy Ministry of the Free Church of Scotland. With that end in view, he enrolled as an Arts student in Aberdeen University, and in due course graduated as Master of Arts. Thereafter he entered the Free Church College, Aberdeen, and, completing his course with credit and honour, was duly licensed by Aberdeen Presbytery.
His thoughts had been directed to the colonial field, and, after careful deliberation, he determined to leave Scotland for Australia. Prior to this, he was called to become minister of a young charge in Fifeshire, but felt that his life’s work lay in the outposts of the Empire.
Shortly after his arrival in New South Wales, he was called as minister of Hay, and, having accepted the call, was ordained and inducted into that charge. For three years he faithfully carried on the work until called to Werribee, in Victoria. He was minister of Werribee for close upon twenty years, and laboured consistently and conscientiously, amidst many difficulties and discouragements, for that period. At the end of that time he resigned, and for some years served his Church in supplying pulpits as occasion offered.
He took a great interest in Church music, and composed several hymn tunes, some of which are used in public worship. His brusque manner somewhat militated against his popularity as a minister, but behind that there was a tenderness that revealed a warm-hearted man and brother.
He passed peacefully away, as the result of a seizure, on November 21, 1924, aged 71 years. The Assembly extends its prayerful sympathy to the widow and members of the family.
