RAFF, Gordon Mitchell, Rev. (1890-1925)
Assembly memorial minute 1925
The Rev. GORDON MITCHELL RAFF was born in the year 1890, and was the son of a greatly esteemed minister of our Church, the Rev. James Raff, of Rushworth. Mr. Raff entered the service of our Church under the auspices of the Home Mission Committee, and laboured with great acceptance in Quambatook, Cohuna, Kinglake and Pioneer (Tas.).
Entering the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1917, he took the full course of training, and in 1920 went, as an exit student, to Merbein. In 1922 he was called, ordained and inducted into the pastoral charge of Wickliffe, and he laboured there as a faithful minister of Christ until the beginning of the present year. After a brief illness, and at the early age of 34 years, he was called to higher service on April 7, 1925.
Mr. Raff was an earnest preacher, a faithful pastor, and a jovial friend. He had a genius for friendship which endeared him to all, a gift of song of no mean order, and a strong physical frame, that made him equal to the strain of long journeys in country districts. The Assembly records its gratitude for the services he rendered to the Church, and expresses its deep regret that at so early an age he should have fallen at his post. It would also convey to the bereaved widow and child, parents and friends, its deep sympathy.
